Plastic packaging is mostly single use. Plant based packaging is made from renewable material such as corn starch, bamboo and sugarcane rather than from oil. The appeal is obvious: if it is genuinely compostable, it can break down naturally instead of sitting in a tip for generations.
The catch is that compostable only means something when it is certified. Check that what you are buying meets the Australian standard for home or commercial composting, and be clear with customers about which one applies. A compostable wrapper that needs an industrial facility will not break down in a backyard bin, and calling it green when it is not is a quick way to lose trust.
Swap four: cardboard
Cardboard remains the workhorse of plastic free packaging, and for good reason. It is strong, relatively cheap, widely recyclable and customers already know how to dispose of it. Corrugated cardboard gives you extra protection for heavier or fragile items without needing plastic padding.

Keep the claims honest. Say what the packaging is made from, whether it can go in the home compost or kerbside recycling, and what you are still working on. Most people are not expecting perfection, they are expecting effort and straight answers. Overstating how green a product is will come back on you faster than a box that still needs work.
Start with the box you ship most
If this all feels like a big job, pick the single product you sell the most of and fix its packaging first. Think of the fridge as a set of zones running from warm to cold.
The door is the warmest spot. It is fine for condiments, jam and juice, but not for milk or eggs, which is exactly where most people put them.
